Nigeria Elections 2023

Nigeria’s 2023 elections promise to be a tightly contested one, with the emergence of a 3-horse race between former Governor of Lagos Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a surprising campaign from the Labour Party’s Peter Obi has shaken up the contest.

As Nigeria prepares for general elections, it is critical that all citizens prioritize peace and unity above all things. Voters especially, are encouraged to be law abiding and not pay heed to unscrupulous figures who seek to engage in bad electoral practice or introduce them to violent means of political activism. Elections are a necessary part of any democracy, but they can also be a source of tension and conflict if they are not conducted peacefully, orderly and fairly.

CDS Africa recognizes the devastating effects any fallouts from the Nigerian elections can have on the entire African continent. We urge all citizens to play a role in promoting peace and stability during and after the elections. Nigerians must resist the urge to incite violence or division, and instead, work to promote dialogue and mutual understanding. To achieve this, there is the need to respect the rights of others who hold opposing views.

Political parties and candidates should engage in constructive debates, be willing to accept the results of the elections, and in the case of any dispute, parties should resort to using lawful dispute resolution mechanisms.

Furthermore, all stakeholders, including the government, security agencies, political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, must work together to promote peace and stability during and after the elections.

The government should make certain that security agencies are adequately prepared to provide Nigerians with the much needed security they require.  Likewise, political parties must conduct themselves responsibly, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric or actions that could incite violence. Civil society organizations should work to increase voter education and engagement while also keeping an eye out for any irregularities during the elections.

Finally, the media must report accurately and responsibly, without resorting to sensationalism or bias.
