We commend the Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, for his election as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party. Our commendations also go to the party, the Electoral Commission, and the Ghana Police Service for organizing and supervising a very peaceful presidential election.
As advocates for democracy, we rank the EC and the NPP a bold B, for the conduct of the November 4, 2023, NPP flagbearer election.
With the election of Dr. Bawumia, the campaign for the 2024 election has started in earnest because the NDC’s candidate, former President John Mahama, has been in place and has started campaigning.
A peaceful election is high on the minds of all Ghanaians and external stakeholders to consolidate and the lease of life of our Fourth Republican democracy. However, what is equally imperative is the political dialogue that is supposed to define the options that the election puts before the citizenry.
In the interest and growth of Ghana’s democracy, we expect that the 2024 general elections will proceed based on issues, unlike the usual bickering, name-calling, and vain argumentation that adds little in terms of substance for voters to ponder or vote on.
We advocate for an issue-driven 2024 election campaign and call on all civil society organizations to join us in this advocacy for the following reasons which we may all well be aware of:
As we look ahead to the 2024 General Elections, let us remember that the destiny of our nation is in our hands. Let us engage in a constructive, issue-based campaign that will lead to a stronger and more prosperous Ghana.
