CDS Africa Commends President Mahama’s Call for Immediate Probe into 2020 and 2024 Election Fatalities

The Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development, CDS Africa welcomes and strongly supports H.E. President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for an immediate and thorough investigation into the election-related fatalities recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. This decisive action marks a significant step toward ensuring accountability and fostering public confidence in Ghana’s electoral processes.

Over the past election cycles, Ghana’s democracy has been marred by instances of electoral violence, some of which have resulted in tragic loss of life. Notably, the 2020 elections saw multiple fatalities, with reports of security forces using excessive force in response to electoral tensions. The lack of comprehensive accountability for these incidents has contributed to a culture of impunity, undermining the integrity of the nation’s democratic institutions. Similarly, the 2024 elections, despite high expectations for peace, were also plagued by violence, further emphasizing the need for urgent action.

CDS Africa firmly believes that justice and accountability are essential to a thriving democracy. The president’s call for a thorough investigation presents an opportunity to correct past injustices and reinforce Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. We urge the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct their work with transparency, independence, and diligence, ensuring that all perpetrators regardless of affiliation are held accountable.

Furthermore, we encourage the government to implement long-term measures to prevent future electoral violence, including comprehensive electoral reforms, enhanced training for security personnel, and active engagement with civil society organizations to promote peaceful elections.
